John and Emma Hooker have run the Cornish Arms for eight years, winning accolades for good quality, good value cooking such as Michelin Bib Gourmand and Top 50 gastropub status.

Head Chef John trained with the likes of Michael Caines and Nathan Outlaw. He competed in Great British Menu and has now broken into television with James Martin.

The 17th century coaching inn at the foothills of Dartmoor has become a ‘big piece of both our souls’, says John.

“Emma and I wanted to create a pub where we would want to spend time and we have truly lived it; sleeping above the pub, renting our house to raise cash to invest and our son was also born here.”

When the time was right to invest in a new kitchen, John called in catering equipment distributor Cornwall Catering Equipment and chose a Charvet modular heavy-duty wall suite as the cooking range.

We needed to reinvest, and I wanted induction because of the cost savings and because it creates a great environment to work in. I also wanted the staff to be proud to come to work in the kitchen.

“We first thought it was out of our price range but Charvet turned out to be a perfect fit.

“Don’t be intimidated by Charvet – it is not just for elite restaurateurs and Michelin-starred restaurants.

“Charvet kit will work for any business, whether you are a pub like we are, or a Michelin restaurant, there is a fit for us as chefs.

“There is minimal cost in maintenance, nothing ever goes wrong. Our utility bills have gone down 10-fold thanks to the induction.

“Since we installed Charvet, we have been churning the covers out and not looked back. We were even able to add another Plancha and more refrigeration to cater for a new breakfast service!”
